Breaking down barriers, building opportunities
Helping tamariki access education and realise their potential.

About the Ted Manson Foundation
At the Ted Manson Foundation, our vision is to deliver transformative change through education and learning for tamariki, primarily in South Auckland’s high-needs communities.
Too many of these tamariki enter school already behind, where many often have a learning maturity age of around three years old. They lack early childhood education, basic social skills, and even the means to arrive at school each day.
Inequity in education leads to inequity in life outcomes, perpetuating the cycle. We know that barriers to education are often systemic and multifaceted, with poverty, trauma, and access to healthcare and nutrition inextricably linked to a child’s ability to learn. We believe no child should be defined by their circumstances, and evidence shows that tamariki thrive when they are supported, nurtured, and empowered. With early intervention, we can give them the tools they need to break the cycle and reach their full potential.
Through our School Ready Programme, TMF funds 12 full-time teachers across 12 low-decile schools, ensuring every Year 1 child begins their education in a TMF-funded ECE class. Tamariki remain in these specialised classes for two to 12 weeks, developing foundational skills before transitioning into standard Year 1 classrooms.
For students with learning challenges such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and fetal alcohol syndrome, the Foundation employs three highly qualified educational psychologists - each supporting four schools - to help these children reach their full potential. No matter the barrier to education, we solve it, and continue to support tamariki through each stage of education to ensure they continue to achieve.

Beyond the School Ready Programme, the Foundation provides:
Specialist hearing and vision services via two fully equipped mobile clinics.
Counselling services in all partner schools.
School transport, with 35 minibuses and 30-seater buses provided to low-decile schools across South and West Auckland.
This is all achieved via strong partnerships with schools, service providers, and community organisations.
Every initiative, partnership, and decision we make is shaped by the belief that helping tamariki overcome barriers to education is essential to creating long-term societal change. Through early intervention, they develop the skills, confidence, and sense of belonging they need to break free from the cycle of disadvantage and build a brighter future.

The Foundation’s commitment to social equity has deep roots in the South Auckland community. Using his decades of experience and resources in property development, Sir Ted Manson founded TMF in 2014, spearheading initiatives to develop high-quality, affordable housing for families in need. As a result, the Ted Manson Foundation has delivered 163 community housing apartments dedicated to providing secure and sustainable homes for a minimum of 25 years. This legacy of creating stable living environments laid the groundwork for the Foundation’s expansion into education, recognising that housing security is crucial for tamariki to thrive in school and beyond.
